How to Choose the Right AC Outdoor Unit (ODU) Motor

AC outdoor unit fan motor selection guide

Choosing the right AC outdoor unit (ODU) fan motor is critical for proper cooling performance and long service life. Replacing it with the wrong specification can cause noise, overheating or premature failure. Here is what to check.

1. Match the RPM

ODU motors typically run between 870 and 1100 RPM. Always match the original motor RPM — a higher RPM motor will overwork the compressor while a lower one reduces cooling.

2. Verify Rotation (CW / ACW)

Fan motors rotate either clockwise (CW) or anti-clockwise (ACW) when viewed from the shaft end. Installing the wrong rotation will push air the wrong way. Check the original motor label.

3. Check Wattage & Capacitor

Match the watts (typically 39–55W for ODU) and the recommended capacitor (2–3 mfd). The capacitor value directly affects starting torque and running efficiency.

4. Confirm Shaft & Flat Size

The shaft extension length and flat size must match so the fan blade fits securely. Even a few millimetres of difference can cause vibration.
